There was a mention on twitter about smart phones still being the predominant issue. Is it possible to look up and compare EU or Japanese data to look for comparisons?

I would guess that just considering increases in traffic wrt new road construction might have more correlation than the smart phone data.

I'll keep looking to see if I can find any evidence that there is something going on with smartphones specific to the US. I have not yet found any, and it would seem surprising that the US would see this big increase while other countries have not.

The NY Times article posited that in the US, smartphone use while driving may be higher because American cars are largely automatic (giving the driver a free hand to use a phone while driving). But in Australia, ~95% of cars sold are automatic, and there doesn't seem to have been a similar increase in pedestrian fatalities. Australian pedestrian fatalities have stayed flat: 158 in the 12 months ending Nov 2014, 163 in the 12 months ending Nov 2023.
